Manual lymphatic drainage according to Dr. Vodder

Manual lymphatic drainage according to Dr. Vodder is an internationally recognized therapeutic method that has been used for many years at the Health Center Olimia. It is a very gentle technique in which the therapist moves the skin in circular or semi-circular motions – stretching it longitudinally and transversely. The movements are slow and are repeated multiple times to stimulate the lymphatic system's response.

MORE about the implementation of manual lymphatic drainage according to dr. Vodder in Terme Olimpia

The lymphatic system consists of lymphatic vessels that begin freely in the intercellular spaces and lymphatic organs (bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes). Just below the collarbone, the lymphatic circulation drains into the circulatory system.

Lymphatic fluid (lymph) is a transparent-yellowish fluid that flows through the lymphatic system and contains waste products from cellular processes, bacteria, viruses, foreign substances, and proteins. With the movements of manual lymphatic drainage, we influence the accelerated contraction of lymphatic vessels and consequently accelerate the movement of lymphatic fluid toward the nearest lymph nodes.

This affects the state of the intercellular space, which becomes more permeable to substances necessary for normal functioning and cell regeneration. In this way, our body is relieved.

The main effects of manual lymphatic drainage are: pain reduction, relaxation, improved immune system function, reduced swelling, and improved skin condition.

Conditions in the human body where manual lymphatic drainage is recommended:

  • All forms of edema (swelling): post-traumatic edema (sprains, strains, hematomas, muscle ruptures), edema after surgical procedures
  • Treatment of primary and secondary lymphedema, lipedema
  • In cases of CRPS – chronic regional pain syndrome (“Sudeck syndrome”)
  • Diseases in the head and neck area – migraine, headache, facial nerve paresis, chronic ear, nose, and throat infections, sinus inflammation
  • Burns, scars, and skin ulcers
  • Edema of supportive and connective tissue (inflammatory rheumatism, osteoarthritis, soft tissue rheumatism, osteoporosis, bursitis, tendinosis, epicondylitis)
  • Localized edema of blood vessel walls and venous edema
  • Dermatological conditions – acne

Manual lymphatic drainage is not recommended or is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Untreated malignant tumors
  • Acute inflammations, e.g., abscesses
  • Acute thrombosis
  • Acute phlebitis
  • Clinically significant heart failure
  • Manual lymphatic drainage therapy is recommended when you need relief and relaxation from everyday stress situations, as it is a method that slows down the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which predominates in our body for most of the day.

For visible results in reducing swelling, pain, and improving skin condition, we recommend at least three consecutive treatments, preferably five consecutive treatments every day. In the treatment of lymphatic system diseases – primary and secondary lymphedema and more severe conditions, at least ten consecutive treatments are recommended.
