Ultrasound-guided injections

At the Health Center Olimia, we perform ultrasound-guided injections. We administer injections in the shoulder joint, elbow joint, wrist, small hand joints, upper and lower ankle joints, small foot joints, knee joint, hip joint, and directly into the area of the affected muscle attachment (e.g., attachment of the gluteus medius muscle at the hip, attachment of the common tendon of the extensors or flexors in the elbow area), subacromial bursa in the shoulder, bursa in pes anserinus, and trigger points throughout the body. Ultrasound-guided blocks in the spinal area are not performed on an outpatient basis.

An ultrasound-guided injection is a procedure in which the doctor uses ultrasound to precisely direct the needle to a specific location in the body where therapy is needed (e.g., corticosteroid, local anesthetic, hyaluronic acid, etc.).

Compared to "blind" injections, where the doctor injects medication without imaging support, ultrasound injections are much more accurate, reducing the risk of injury and increasing the effectiveness of the treatment. The advantages of this technique include better results and fewer side effects, as the medication is delivered exactly where it is needed. Indications for ultrasound-guided injections include the treatment of joint pain, tendon inflammations, bursitis, arthritis, and pain relief in muscle trigger points ("muscle knots").

This method allows for safer and more targeted treatment, improving the overall outcome of therapy. It is also used for precise puncture of a swollen joint, as it enables safe removal of excess joint fluid.

Our specialists

Assist. Prof. Dr. Matjaž Voršič, MD, Specialist in Neurosurgery

He works as a specialist in spinal surgery. He is an internationally recognized expert and operates both in Slovenia and abroad.

He has been working with spinal surgery for nearly 20 years, covering all types of surgeries—from simple minimally invasive nerve decompressions to complex spinal stabilizations and corrections. A few years ago, he introduced dynamic fixation of the lumbar spine in Slovenia. His motto has always been to improve the patient’s condition with as minimally invasive an approach as possible to the spine. Recently, he has been performing minimally invasive spinal decompressions, where, through a small skin incision on one side, nerves are relieved on both the left and right sides. He has also recently introduced a new method for degenerative spinal diseases in Slovenia, where a minimally invasive fixation and spinal reinforcement are performed from the side.

In the treatment of the cervical spine, he primarily uses hybrid techniques, which are especially useful for severe degenerative changes at multiple levels of the cervical spine. For example, in the case of cervical spine degeneration at multiple levels, surgery is required with fixation and fusion at several levels, which results in reduced neck mobility.

To avoid this, he uses hybrid techniques for patients with multi-level degenerative cervical spine disorders, which include combinations of anterior cervical discectomy with fusion and arthroplasty (artificial cervical disk) of the cervical intervertebral disc. As a result, the mobility of the cervical spine using hybrid techniques is physiologically similar to that of a healthy spine. The surgery is straightforward, but it must be performed precisely. First, the compressed nerve structures must be relieved, and then stabilization or the insertion of an artificial disk must be carried out.

Marko Nabergoj, MD, Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery
